This year’s Flame Fantasy event took place on April 29, 2012 at the South Bellevue Community Center where guests had the opportunity to learn about Camp Korey’s mission and bid on one-of-a-kind items. In total the Luncheon raised over $13,000 and will help provide transformative camp experiences for more children living with serious medical conditions at no cost to their families.

For generations, Delta Zeta’s Flame Fantasy Luncheon has been helping worthy causes, and Camp Korey is honored to have been the charity of choice at the Flame Fantasy Luncheon for the last three years. Thank you Delta Zeta for your continued support!

From the beginning Dr. Chuck and Katrina have been great resources and advocates for this program, helping design the weekend schedule, spreading the word to participants, and recruiting specialists to volunteer.

This month, Camp Korey is grateful for Lorna Faxon, and her wonderful donation of hand-tailored Alice in Wonderland themed costumes, including dresses, vests, and skirts. Thanks to Lorna’s stellar seamstress skills, campers will dress in character this spring and summer at Alice in Wonderland Tea Parties and while performing on stage.

During every camp session, campers look forward to Stage Night with much anticipation. Whether they perform a solo comedy routine or sing their favorite camp cheer as an entire cabin, all campers are encouraged to express themselves and have fun. Before their act, campers love to explore the wonders of the costume closet in search of the perfect outfit.

Lorna first learned of Camp Korey through her good friends Linda Nordstrom, Mark Mowat and Connie Mowat, who invited her to last year’s harvest celebration and fundraiser, Grow. She loved seeing how much the campers enjoyed dressing up and performing on stage and was inspired to lend her talents as a designer to Camp Korey’s theater program.

Camp Korey would like to recognize Dr. Michael Goldberg, Director of the Skeletal Health Program at Seattle Children’s, for his outstanding support in advising, coordinating and facilitating our debut Skeletal Dysplasia Family Weekend.

Harry Potter high tea, family stage night, camp-wide scavenger hunt, tennis court snowball fights … Wow! Our first Family Weekend of 2012 was a tremendous success! We’re so happy that twelve families (7 of which were BRAND NEW to our program) could come out to Camp Korey and experience an incredible weekend of friendship, fun and excitement.

A BIG thanks to the 23 volunteers who dedicated their weekend to our campers and families. We would also like to acknowledge the care and creativity of volunteer nurse Brenda Eng. Thank you, Brenda, for creating an atmosphere of joy and bringing smiles to all of our faces.

One family’s note of gratitude:

“We just had to write a quick note to tell you about our time at Skeletal Dysplasia Family Weekend. Our son TJ is 9 years old and has Achondroplasia. He was born in Russia and came home to us when he was 4 years old. So often, TJ feels “different”… because of his adoption and certainly because of his size. Here at Camp Korey he is celebrated- and we LOVE it!! This weekend has been amazing, stress-free, and such a wonderful time for all of us. TJ’s siblings have also felt so valued here, which is such a special gift.  Thank you for your hard work and your investment in the lives of children who come to Camp Korey. AMR ambulance started in the City of Seattle in 1923 and has grown to the largest private ambulance company in the nation, transporting nearly 4 million patients a year.  Locally, they serve over 250,000 patients from Everett to Seattle to Portland as well as Yakima, Tri Cities and Spokane. They have EMT, Paramedic and RN transport services as well as non emergent wheelchair services. AMR serves several community initiatives and is proud to play a small part at Camp Korey.
